Windows Vista and USB Modem

I have a PPC 6700 with Alltel service and I am trying to use my phone
as a USB modem. The computer has windows Vista for the operating
system and the drivers are not installing correctly. Does anyone know
of a work around for this? I have contacted both UtStar and Alltel
and they were no help.

Thanks

Kirby

Re: Windows Vista and USB Modem

I couldn't get drivers for my 6700 either for a while. I ended up
installing ActiveSync thinking "hell, maybe this has 'em" and to my
surprise it worked.

Re: Windows Vista and USB Modem

I have my 6700 working fine as a modem in Vista using USB and Bluetooth.
The setup is the same as XP, if you run into any problems I can list the
steps I did.

I did run into problems. The drivers would not install correctly.
When I contacted the manufacturer they said it was a know issue and
that it does not work currently as a modem with vista, either a USB or
Blue tooth.

Eric,

I too was not able to get my usb modem to work (XV6700) on Vista. I used
the same files and steps as on XP.

Can you post the steps you took?

These are the steps I used.

Requirement
Before setup an CDMA USB Modem you must verify that you have two files
"CDMA USB Modem.INF"
"CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe"

Installation and Usage
1. On Windows Mobile: Tap Start->Programs->Wireless Modem
2. Select "USB" as the connection type, and then press the "Start"
button.
3. Connect your Windows Mobile with Desktop PC by USB cable/cradle.
4. On Desktop PC, new hardware will be found. Select "No, not this
time" and press "Next"

5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and
press "Next"

6. Press "Browser" to specific the folder which contain the "CDMA USB
Modem.INF", and then press "Next"

7. Press "Continue Anyway"

8. Press "Finish" to complete "CDMA USB Modem" driver installation.

9. After installation you have a new USB Modem called "CDMA USB Modem"
in Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options

10. Run the application "CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe"

11. Please contact with your service provider and obtain the User Name
and Password. Entering User Name and Password, and then press "Dial"
to make the data connection.

Getting Start:

1. On Windows Mobile: Tap Start->Programs->Wireless Modem
2. Select your connection type, and then press "Start" button
3. Connect your Windows Mobile with Desktop PC by USB cable/cradle..
4. Open the application "CDMA USB Modem Dialer.exe"
5. Entering user name and password and dial number, then press "Dial"

PPC6700 and Vista

I am also not able to use my new Dell with Vista and my handset as a cdma modem. I tried several times to instal it and it does not work period. One time it got almost to the end of the process then errored out. Does anyone know if ALltel is going to offer a solution to this? I have contacted UTStarcom, they are laying the responsibility on Alltel.

XV6700 Bluetooth Modem

I have been having similar problems out of my ppc and laptop. The funny thing is that before I installed Vista I was able to connect via usb but not bluetooth. I've tried to download and install the programs listed with no success. I finally just went into the bluetooth app on the laptop and created a partnership with the phone and let Vista do everything. Once Vista was done and generated a key for me to plug into the ppc, a bluetooth modem connection was created for me. Now, when I connect I don't run any applications on the ppc. I enable bluetooth and then go to "Connect to a network" in Vista, select the bluetooth dial-up connection, enter the required info (name and password), and hit 'dial'. The connection via bluetooth is a bit slow for my liking, but it is working. I would still prefer to connect via USB (at least under XP I found the connection speed to much better). If anyone comes across a way to enable the USB connection in Vista please let me know. Thanks.

PPC6700 and Vista, I think I found the way

Hey Jim: I've also been frustrated by this issue but may have stumbled on how Vista can handle the installation.

AllTel will hide behind the "we haven't gotten the proper driver from Microsoft" excuse.

The way I got mine to work was, modify the provided .inf file with the suggestions provided on the Microsoft link provided above, which boils down to ensuring that you add the following line "include=mdmcpq.inf" under the following captions [Modem1.NT]; [Modem1.NT.Services] and [Modem1.NT.HW]

Start the modem and plug into the computer, assuming this is not the first time you've attempted this, the USB new device discovery won't show up, instead, the modem will show and an improperly configured modem under the name "Prototype" in the Device Manager, right click and click on update driver, DO NOT let Windows do it automatically, instead, point the installation to the path where the modified .inf file is.

The installation should complete succesfully. I have tested the modem couple of times and is working fine.

Good luck...

Big Al

That's funny, because my vanilla Windows XP has more or less the exact
behavior. Flaky or no USB connectivity, and snappy, reliable BT. You
can guess which one I use regularly.

My apologies Beverly, I had gotten the link to the Microsoft article from another website...but here it is...

How to use or to reference the Usbser.sys driver from universal serial bus (USB) modem .inf files

Hope this helps

Re: Windows Vista and USB Modem

loungefly8, check my post of 3-21, the device manager should be reporting a "Prototype" USB modem instead of the correct one.

Click on update driver and DO NOT let Vista do it automatically, instead choose a manual install and point the installation to your modified .inf file.
